Shenzhen, China, 7 May 2019 – China will be experiencing another wave of European football fever this summer when the 2019 Trophée des Champions and the inaugural International Super Cup is staged across three Chinese cities from July to August. Football fans in China can look forward to exciting match-ups between Ligue 1 champions Paris Saint-Germain (PSG), Serie A giants Inter Milan, Spanish top flight RCD Espanyol, as well as this year’s Coupe de France winner, Stade Rennais.

The International Super Cup is a brand new international football tournament conceived by Kaisa Culture & Sports Group – with the support of Lagardère Sports – who are also responsible for staging the Trophée des Champions. The International Super Cup will kick off on 27 July with PSG playing Inter Milan at the Macau Olympic Complex (Taipa), followed by a match between PSG and Espanyol at the Suzhou Olympic Sport Centre on 30 July.

Millions of fans in China will be delighted to see Espanyol’s Chinese forward Wu Lei – who was the first Chinese player to score in Spain’s top division La Liga – returning to his homeland to make an appearance at the tournament.

A press conference was held in Shenzhen on Monday afternoon (6 May) to unveil the exciting match-ups. Officiating representatives included the director of the Shenzhen Bureau of Culture, Sports and Tourism, Wang Zhiqiang; chief sales and marketing officer and investor relations of Ligue de Football Professionnel (LFP), Olivier Jaubert; chief executive officer of Kaisa Culture & Sports Group, Shu Li, as well as Echo Li Ying, vice-president of corporate partnerships, Greater China at Lagardère Sports. PSG’s Maxwell Scherrer, Inter Milan’s Marco Materazzi, and Espanyol’s Raúl Tamudo Montero also lent star appeal to the occasion.

During the press conference, Kaisa’s Shu Li said that his company will be leveraging its rich experience in organising major tournaments to provide fans with a platform to enjoy up-close interactions with star players and premier football clubs. “Looking to the future, Kaisa Culture & Sports Group will continue to assert our major sporting event competencies by organising new IP tournaments that will benefit the community and boost the economy.”

Lagardère Sports’ Echo Li said: “Lagardère Sports is honoured to be able to partner Kaisa to conceive a brand new IP in the form of the International Super Cup, as well as assist the Shenzhen government and Kaisa in organising the Trophée des Champions for the second consecutive year in China. Both events will present Shenzhen, Macau and Suzhou with an international platform to demonstrate their potential, strengthen Kaisa’s foothold in Shenzhen, and expand their reach across China.”

The International Super Cup will provide an invaluable opportunity for premier football clubs to amplify their presence in China, and facilitate more meaningful engagements between brands and Chinese fans. As part of the tournament’s promotional plans, the football teams will be touring several Chinese cities to meet fans on and off the pitch.

Kaisa Culture & Sports Group will host two International Super Cup matches every year in China, which will see premier European football clubs competing for the trophy.  There are also plans to introduce the tournament to Southeast Asia and North America.

The match between PSG and Inter Milan will be among the few top football matches hosted by Macau in recent years. 2019 marks the 70th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China (PRC), the 20th anniversary of the establishment of the Macau Special Administrative Region, and the 80th anniversary of the establishment of the Macau Football Association.

The International Super Cup and Trophée des Champions form part of a strategic effort to further develop the business of sports in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macau Greater Bay Area.

In 2018, Lagardère Sports brokered a collaboration between the Ligue de Football Professionnel and Kaisa Culture & Sports Group to secure the Trophée des Champions for the city of Shenzhen, which has helped to reinforce Shenzhen’s reputation as a leading destination for hosting major international events. Lagardère Sports was also the events operation consultant for the 2018 Trophée des Champions.

The 2019 Trophée des Champions will kick off on 3 August and will see PSG and Rennais meeting at the Shenzhen Universiade Sports Centre since they last clashed at the Coupe de France.

“Conquering the Chinese market is an important venture for LFP, which hopes to strengthen their fanbase here and to share their passion with Chinese fans,” added Lagardère Sports’ Echo Li. “Staging the Trophée des Champions in Shenzhen has helped LFP secure a piece of China’s competitive market, which has also served to further promote French football. We are grateful to LFP and Kaisa  for their unwavering support.”
