London, 16 July 2019 – The 2019 Total Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) has kicked-off on Friday 21st June and this year’s tournament sees fans benefit from a record number of digital content and competitions, available online and on social media, that get them closer to the action.

For the first time in history, the 2019 edition of the tournament takes place in summer with an expanded 24 teams playing in 52 matches. Lagardère Sports, the commercial and marketing rights holder for CAF and the AFCON Tournament, working closely with CAF and tournament sponsors such as Total, Orange, Visa, 1XBet and Continental, has further expanded The Total AFCON’s digital presence for the 2019 tournament in Egypt.

The 2017 Total Africa Cup of Nations set new standards for digital fan engagement, with 250m people reached online during the tournament and 650m impressions generated. In total 20m people were actively sharing, liking or posting content about 2017 Total AFCON.

Speaking about the experience fans can expect, Idriss Akki, President of Football Africa at Lagardère Sports, said; “AFCON 2017 set new standards for how fans can experience the tournament on digital platforms. In 2019, Lagardère Sports has built further on this success and take CAF and its sponsors to the next level, making sure fans get closer to the action than ever before. We have helped CAF develop partnerships with platforms such as Facebook, YouTube and 433, with the aim of offering the biggest online coverage of the competition ever.”

Here is a run-down of how fans can get closer to the action in 2019:

Total Social Stadium: A digitally connected room within stadiums, where social media influencers and public figures from Egypt, Zimbabwe, Ivory Coast, South Africa, Nigeria, Guinea, Senegal and Algeria are invited to create behind the scenes content and give their fans a different pitch side perspective.

Total Ball Kids

Five children from Egypt, Nigeria, Algeria, Madagascar, and the Ivory Coast will have the once in a lifetime opportunity to become ball kids for the final match in Cairo on July 19th. Each child has a dedicated episode shot in their home country highlighting their story. These films are available to view on the tournament’s YouTube, Twitter and Facebook channels from 17th June 2019. A final episode showcasing their role at the final will be published a week after the competition.

To ensure fans have their voices heard, Total allows fans to send supportive messages via their social media platforms, with the best messages displayed on the pitch side advertising boards at select games. The campaign was launched before the Total AFCON 2019 starts, here. This activation has been delivered across 12 games during the group stages.

Total Man of the Match Awards

Through dedicated posts on both Total and CAF’s social media platforms, fans have the opportunity to predict the Total Man of the Match for all 52 games at the tournament. Those who guess correctly will be in with a chance of winning a VIP package to attend the final of the CHAN Total in Cameroun in 2020:

Total Match Highlights

Fans never have to be afraid of missing a match ever again, with highlights of all 52 games published on CAF social media platforms after each game. These can be viewed across Total AFCON 2019 social media channels, website and CAF TV YouTube channel. And for the first time, the match highlights are directly available on Google Box after each match; some examples include Ghana Tunisie, Egypte South Africa, and Algérie Senegal

Presenting partner of the official prediction game of the Total AFCON 2019; a digital platform accessible on desktop and mobile, gives fans the chance to predict the outcome of each game. The Total Africa Cup of Nations is a celebration full of colour. For fans that really stand out in the stadium, tournament, official sponsor Orange will use the large screens and advertising boards to showcase their efforts. The most enthusiastic fan at each game, as judged by Orange, will receive the Fan of the Match trophy.

Orange Warm Up Experience

Fans can enter the Best Commentator game, an online game inviting fans from 11 countries to comment on goals from previous AFCON tournaments. At all 52 games, four of the best commentators will be chosen to experience the players warm-up, pitch-side, prior to kick-off.
